Earlier I wrote about the relief I felt when Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Another four years of Trump would have been worse than intolerable. But that election gave us some breathing room. The threat to our democracy subsided with cooler heads in the White House. But during that time Trump would not let up, and the republican party has embraced him in ways that I do not understand. This has been such a failure of leadership that it will be written about in history books for centuries.
But several things have taken place recently that give me reason for hope. Trump started on a slippery slope when he lost two important civil cases, the E. Jean Carroll case that set him back $85+ million, and then he was fined more than $400 million in the New York State civil fraud case. That's more than a half billion dollars, and he came within a hair's breadth of not being able to come up with the necessary bonds which would have had the courts taking over his properties. He's not nearly out of the woods yet on those two issues.
But the best one yet was when a jury in New York convicted him of 34 felony counts in what is referred to as the Stormy Daniels hush money case. Those are personal criminal indictments which could land him in prison. And that is the biggest setback of all. I know he's out there talking about how corrupt the justice system is, what a tool of Joe Biden's it is, and all other kinds of excuses. And he is backed by some pretty cowardly Republicans who cannot seem to let go of their master's coat tails. But all of that is BS. And he is still facing three more criminal indictments that could land him in prison for the rest of his life.
So, for now he continues to hold the spotlight while he runs his mouth and makes accusations against everybody while claiming his own innocence. And his followers are heading down the rabbit hole with him. But Trump is falling apart. He's lost three very significant cases, and he is losing his mind more and more everyday. And, while he does that, he's ruining the reputations and careers of dozens of Republican politicians.
I'm not gloating, but I'm not disappointed either. I hope Trump continues to deteriorate until he is just a skid mark in the history books. He earned this for himself. He has put a lot of people through a lot of pain. He has ruined lives and caused hundreds of thousands of deaths by his denial of remedies for the pandemic. Whatever he gets, he deserves. May he rot in hell.
